Surviving Your Kitchen Remodel: 7 Tips to Stay Say Sane (and Maybe Even Enjoy the Process)

A kitchen remodel is one of the most exciting - and sometimes most stressful - projects a homeowner can take on. At Sullivans Custom Cabinetry, we know firsthand how much planning and patience goes into creating a beautiful, functional space. And while the result is always worth it, living without a working kitchen for weeks can be a challenge. To help you through it, we’ve gathered our top tips for surviving your kitchen remodel with your sanity (and appetite) intact.

Set Up a Temporary Kitchen

Designate a space in your home- whether it’s the dining room, garage, or even a spare bedroom-where you can prepare simple meals. Include:

  • A table or surface for prep

  • A microwave, toaster oven, or air fryer

  • A mini fridge or cooler with ice

  • A bin for dry foods and spices

  • A dish bin and access to water (even the bathroom sink works)

Simplify Your Meals

This is not the time to try out complex new recipes. Stick to low mess, no fuss meals. Need some recipes? Check out this blog from Greens & Chocolate!

Think:

  • Sandwiches

  • Premade salads

  • Macaroni and Cheese

  • Microwavable or one-pot meals

And hey, you’ve got an excuse to explore local takeout options too!

Stock Up on Disposables

Washing dishes in the bathroom sink gets old fast. Invest in paper plates, cups, and utensils to cut down on cleanup.

Plan for Contingencies

Remodels don’t always go exactly as planned—and that’s okay!

  • Contingency Plan: Have a backup plan in case of unexpected delays or issues.

  • Flexibility: Be ready to pivot if schedules shift or decisions need to change.

  • Seek Expert Advice: Lean on your contractor for guidance and support throughout the process. They have seen it all and can help you navigate the bumps.

Make sure you are having frequent communication with your contractor on the status of your project so that you can plan accordingly and avoid any surprises.

Protect the Rest of Your Home and Your Family

Remodels are messy. Keep the dust out by sealing off adjacent rooms with plastic sheets or temporary barriers. Consider rolling up your rugs and using plastic runners in walkways.

  • Protect children by blocking off any entry points to the construction site.

  • Keep your food stored in bins or the refrigerator to minimize the amount dust they collect.

Completely keeping out the dust may be impossible, but it's definitely worth the effort to minimize it as much as possible.

Stick to Your Routine (as Much as You Can)

A remodel can feel chaotic but maintaining parts of your normal routine-like morning coffee, family meals, or winding down with a movie-can help life feel more grounded.

Keep Your Eye on the Finish Line

When the dishes are piling up and your fridge is in the living room, remember this is temporary. Your new kitchen will be beautiful, functional, and 100% worth it!
